My Colombia Travel Bucket List: Monterrey

My Travel Experience

My name is Luis Alexander Carrasquilla Baiter. One of my favorite travel experiences was visiting Monterrey, Casanare, in the Eastern Plains of Colombia. My uncle lived there, so I used to go there every year during summer vacations or Holy Week.

I remember that I always looked forward to these trips because of the warm weather and the kindness of the people. Monterrey has breathtaking landscapes, including amazing viewpoints and waterfalls. I used to spend my days exploring the town and hanging out with my family. We often went out to visit the local rivers and creeks; those 'paseos de río' were the best part of the trip.

A Taste of the Plains

If you visit Casanare, you must try the local food. The most famous dish is "Carne a la Llanera" (veal). You should also taste "Hayacas" and "Tungos," which are traditional corn-based snacks. If you drink a cold "Guarapo" while eating, you would have the perfect traditional lunch! I used to love the smell of the firewood when my family prepared these meals.

Nearby Adventures: Aguazul & Tauramena

If you have more time, you should definitely check out the nearby towns. In Aguazul, the 'Rice Capital', you can find beautiful green fields. On the other hand, Tauramena is known for its folklore. You ought to listen to the harp music there; if you heard it, you would feel the true soul of the plains. These places might offer you the most colorful sunsets in Colombia.
